The stone pine tree
Many names, the same meaning. Swiss stone pine, stone pine, Zirm, Zirbel, Zirbelkiefer, Bergkiefer or Dschember are all terms for the stone pine tree. Scientists also like to use the term Pinus Cembra.
The Swiss stone pine is a type of tree that is mainly found above 1,600 meters above sea level, in the Alps or Carpathians, the roughest and coldest mountain edges. Where it gets warmer it disappears. The Swiss stone pine, the softest of all conifers, tolerates acidic soils better than most tree species. According to estimates, this rare tree species can reach an age of up to 800 years, although this is the exception. On average, the Swiss stone pine lives to be 200 to 400 years old and grows up to 25 meters tall.
Due to the great stresses in the mountains caused by the seasons, the Swiss stone pine tree produces a particularly large amount of resins and essential oils. These have a distinctive, pleasant fragrance and also improve sleep quality and regeneration.
